Sundance Film Festival, Bottled Water and the Small Things Challenge

by Dale Taylor (Intel) on Sunday 1 February 2009

The message concerning bottled water and using filtered alternatives is turning into a popular cause.  This year at the Sundance Film Festival in Utah, Nalgene and Brita combined to distribute bottles and promote filtering your water instead of buying bottled water.  They distributed thousands of bottles and provided filling stations at the various events.

Here’s a story sharing the news:  http://www.fitsugar.com/2688300

To spread the word of the cause they have started a website http://filterforgood.com/ where you can learn more about their goals.  The story received local and national news coverage.  While they do have a direct interest in the cause (selling bottles and filters) the bottom line is that if people are willing to make just such a change it can help save millions of tons of trash and avoid the emissions that would have been created from the creation and usage of the materials.  Joining the trends of a connected world they’ve also created a Facebook page you can link to as a “fan” to join the cause.

I applaud the efforts of these companies and hope that this event, along with efforts such as the http://SmallThingsChallenge.com by Intel can all combine into a wiser consumer on a worldwide basis.  Yet again this comes down to the true cost of blatant consumption, and I refer to this article as a great way to get an understanding of these issues.  I highly recommend it:
