But are we just talking about "hype" or is this reality.

Press the "pause" button for a minute. Everything from your TV to your Cell-Phone has gone interactive, companies today exist in a virtual world and they need your business every minute of the day.
Press the “pause” button for a minute. Everything from your TV to your Cell-Phone has gone interactive, companies today exist in a virtual world and they need your business every minute of the day. In this mad race to gain “customer” confidence, everyone is just about “social” i.e. having a facebook page, twitter accounts, “buzz” ing around you, connecting on orkut and eventually in “my(your)space”, interactive TV is just the beginning with 3D television. You are educated about anything by the company that wants your attention if not then your friend or an acquaintance who has more than 6 degrees of separation can influence your thoughts by being “linked-in” to your social network.

We need to measure all these events and calculate the “profitability” from being social (from an enterprise perspective). This is where Social Analytics becomes a “reality”. The ability of a company to measure how much “customer-centric” they are from being a “product” vendor and link that move to bottom line revenues is what we call Social Analytics.

In the next generation of the Data Warehouse, the measures, metrics and KPI’s for any company will be led by its “customer-centricity” which largely will be social analytics driven. The new frontier of CRM+Marketing = Social Presence, will be accounted for in “Customer Revenue”+”Influencer Revenue” = Total Revenue, and Customer Profitability = Total Revenue / “Number of people influenced” (how many people did a customer influence to buy a service or product).

I have been looking at different companies who are engaged in DWBI services and their strategies. In a fair assessment, i think about 50% of the times 50% of the strategies work. The strategies that any service provider organization comes with will not work all the time, this is simply because of changing business conditions, which is no surprise. But why would strategies fail, especially since the companies in question are service providers, the probable reasons are

Lack of vision - The vision of the organization may be very narrow

Lack of clarity - The organization is not clear about its customers needs and goals

Lack of market - The organization is in a market where they cannot compete

Lack of credentials - The organization may have a great strategy around services/solutions and no credentials to back up their solutions

Lack of scalability - The organization may have limited scalability in terms of manpower, causing strategies to fail

Lack of transparency - The organization may lack transparency in client communications with their teams and thereby causing failure

Lack of capabilities - The organization may have limited capabilities in service offerings and hence may cause bandwidth constraints into itself.

Lack of collaboration - The organization may not work with the client in a collaboration and may end-up performing as an order taker than a partner

In my perspective there are more reasons, but a combination of the reasons above is where normally the failure curve starts to creep up. I have been reading up on seminal work from great strategy gurus, who also recommend that if any of the above points are not clearly articulated, we will definitely see issues. My two cents, revisit the points and ponder over it to come to your conclusions.

Lack of transparency – The organization may lack transparency in client communications with their teams and thereby causing failure

Lack of capabilities – The organization may have limited capabilities in service offerings and hence may cause bandwidth constraints into itself.

Lack of collaboration – The organization may not work with the client in a collaboration and may end-up performing as an order taker than a partner

In the Digital world, you have concerns about losing your identity, due to theft. If we take a step back, the primary reason for building a Data Warehouse was to have a single source of truth across the organization, which will improve streamlined reporting and analytical capabilities. In the past decade we have made forays into “real time” data warehousing, which is a very relative term when you apply a broad brush context to the entire industry. Now we are in the middle of “text data integration” or “unstructured data integration”, cloud computing, data virtualization, social intelligence and more to come. Where and what exactly is “next generation” in this context? In my opinion, the “next generation” of data warehousing will be a combination of platform enablement with “MDM”, relationship management with Social Intelligence and Sentiment Analysis, transactional information from Web2.x based systems and SOA enabled SCM, ERP and Financial systems (read services).
In my opinion, the unstructured data integration into the data warehouse is a very key area of applicability for the Columnar database. The reason for this statement, stems from the fact that the unstructured database is a very column oriented data store and if we are processing oodles of text, the reference of information will be more clustered in nature. This drives the need to store the data in a co-located manner, which then leads me to look at columnar databases more closely.

I do not imply that Oracle, SQL Server, DB2 or Teradata cannot support the unstructured database needs, but for those who want to adopt to the cloud, use more on demand scalability etc, columnar databases may be an in-house option.
I’m currently running tests on Infobright and will share the results in the next few days. I’m processing a large volume of semi-structured and unstructured data and will measure the throughput and performance against the standard RDBMS platforms.

In my technical opinion, choosing a columnar database for processing large textual data provides more business benefits, the final results can be migrated to a corporate environment, but operational aspects can be done in the columnar platform.

I have been researching on this subject for the past few months. It is becoming clear that to control errors in diagnosis and treatment of medical conditions, Evidence Based Medicine can be defined as "the conscientious, explicit
decisions about the care of the individual patient.
While search from Google, Oracle and others are supporting the search portions, Clinical data is heavily semi-structured - a combination of structured and unstructured data. The unstructured portions is where you have all the content and context of diagnosis, treatments, prognosis, conclusions etc. This is where Textual ETL and the unstructured database build will help us. The entire DW2.0 methodology can be directly applied to this system. We can classify, categorize, contextualize and capture information from the clinical data into a database.

In conducting the research, I have found that we can process years of clinical data into an unstructured database with relative ease and when combined with the statistical research data, the results have been an eye-opener. The possibilities of reducing errors and offering the right treatment means the cost of healthcare can be managed well. The quality of the treatment will be more rewarding and welcome.

I know that many Doctors and other medical professionals have different opinions on this subject, but that was when no technology was available to support EBM, now that we do, we should start paying attention to this area.

I will be writing my first article for this year on this subject, stay tuned for the article.
